Lot Essay

The manuscript from which this leaf comes is the Baburnameh of 1595 of which the greatest part is in the Moscow State Museum of Oriental Cultures and a second portion in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore. The incident related concerns a raid on the Turkman Hazaras in reprisal for theft of sheep and horses. A group of men are captured, but their lives are spared.
