Gouache heightened with gold on paper, the purple demon standing brandishing a stick with the dragon entwined around him and biting his leg, the dragon's head resembling the end of the demon's tail, large tear with slight restoration and flaking of paint, mounted on card with blue borders composed of spiralling phoenixes

Lot Essay

A painting by the same artist with a comparable subject of a man being attacked by two dragons, dated fourteen years earlier, is in the British Museum, (Canby, S.: Persian Painting, London, 1993, fig.76, p.111).
