All the drawings, as well as having the signature of Duhousset, also have his seal in red. For the Persian subjects this is a nasta'liq seal; for the Turkish it is in the form of a tughra. Many of the drawings also have the seal impressions or even signatures of the subjects.
Emile Duhousset (or Du Houssaye) was a commandant in the French army who was part of the French military mission to Persia in 1859-60. In Persia he was appointed as Master-of -Arms to the Shah. It must be assumed that it was in this role that he designed the military parade on the first page of this album. He was obviously close to the Shah who was himself interested in painting. He is reported to have exchanged drawings with the Shah (Le Monde Illustré, June 1948).
