AN EARLY SAFAVID ENGRAVED BRASS 'MAGIC' BOWL
PERSIA, EARLY 16TH CENTURY
Of rounded form with small central omphalos and small everted rim on short foot, the interior engraved with extensive naskh inscriptions around two bands of roundels, the upper originally with the signs of the zodiac, the lower originally with the sun, moon and planets, the centre also originally with a pictorial roundel, divided by small arabesque panels and 'X' motif roundels with silver inlay, the exterior with bold swirling panels containing cloudband and rosettes alternating with interlaced arabesques, the centre with a stellar flowerhead formed of interlaced strapwork, in a border of elegant naskh calligraphy between similar stripes, all pictorial roundels defaced
