Marianne Dorothea, second daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Harland, Bt., (c.1715-1784) of Sproughton Hall, Suffolk and his second wife Susan Reynolds, married General William Dalrymple (1735-1807), who was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the Chelsea Hospital in 1798. Their only son John William Henry succeeded as 7th Earl of Stair (1784-1840). Cosway also painted this sitter in oil (see exhibition catalogue Richard and Maria Cosway, Edinburgh and London, 1995-1996, colour pl. 30).
