Henry Colton Shumway was born in Middletown, Connecticut, and arrived in New York in 1828 where he took life drawing classes at the National Academy of Design and probably studied miniature painting with Thomas Seir Cummings (see lot 95). By 1831, he had established himself as a miniature painter and in 1844 received a gold palmette for best miniatures at the New York Fair exhibit. Shumway charged $10 for his first works and received up to $300 per miniature at the height of his career.
