Charles Fraser turned to miniature painting at the age of thirty-eight having trained as a lawyer. He was Charleston's foremost miniaturist painter and between 1818 and 1846, Fraser documented 633 works in a record book. He was chosen to paint Lafayette on his visit to Charleston in 1825. In 1857, an exhibition was mounted of his work showing miniatures, landscapes, still-lifes and sketches.
