Lot Essay

Edward Samuel Dodge, the younger brother of John Wood Dodge (see lots 96 and 98) was probably instructed in the art of miniature painting by his brother. By 1836 he was exhibiting miniatures at the National Academy of Design and in 1837, he moved to Poughkeepsie where he worked until 1842. In 1844, he was painting in Richmond, Virginia and from 1850 to 1854 is known to have lived in Georgia. He exhibited twice in Charleston at the South Carolina Institute where he won an award for the best miniature. In 1856, he moved with his family to live with his brother on Cumberland Mountain, Tennessee.
