Charles XIII (1748-1818), King of Sweden from 1809 and of Norway from 1814. As Duke of Södermanland he commanded the Swedish fleet against Russia (1788-90) and after his brother's assassination in 1792 was made regent during the minority of his nephew. When Gustav IV was deposed in 1809, Charles was elected King and signed a new constitution limiting the powers of the monarchy. In the following year, the French marshal Bernadotte was elected crown prince and adopted by the King. Charles XIII married Duchess Hedwig of Oldenburg (1759-1818).
