Lot Essay

The various elements of these antique or Etruscan chairs, with their scrolled and reed-enriched legs and medallion-draped backs, relate to patterns of 1802 published together with 'Herculaniums' in Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet Directory, 1803. They are painted with 'poetic' trophies of musical instruments, and correspond to a set of satinwood chairs with scenes of sporting youths, sold anonymously in these Rooms, 27 June 1985, lot 82.
