A PAIR OF REGENCY BRONZED AND PARCEL-GILT OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Each chair with fluted lines overall and a curved toprail above a horizontal caned splat and lappeted baluster stretcher, the caned seat with removable wooden seatboard and squab cushion covered in golden velvet, the downswept arms supported by lion monopodia with anthemion breast plates and paw feet, one with indistinct pencil inscription, re-decorated (2)

Lot Essay

A similar Etruscan-black armchair with gilt enrichments was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 26 February 1981, lot 26, while another pair were advertised by Stair & Company in the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair catalogue in 1989. A similar chair, with voluted scrolls in place of the leopardess masks, was acquired by the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1931 (R. Edwards, A History of the English Chair, London, 1951, fig.117, inv. no. W.11-1931).
