Lot Essay

The chubby proportions, short wings and abundantly curling hair are just a few of the characteristics of the present figure which connect it to bronzes by Niccolò Roccatagliata. Comparison with the following lot shows the extent of the connection. Here, however, the thinner cast and the inclusion of the tasselled cushion suggest a later date of production; the present inkwell was undoubtedly produced by an artist familiar with the work of Roccatagliata, although perhaps from a subsequent generation.
