The present bronze inkwell is one of several known examples. These vary slightly, particularly in the decoration of the tripod base which can be plain, elaborately decorated with scrolls or, as with this inkwell, embellished with the spreading roots of the stump on which the figure of Cupid sits. Although obviously serving a functional purpose, domestic bronzes of this nature were also independent works of art; the tripod base and the twisting pose of the present piece ensure that it can be appreciated from numerous viewpoints.
