Lot Essay

Geoffrey Godden attributes this pattern to James Giles's workshop in his paper, 'Chinese Porcelain Transfer Printed in England', English Ceramic Circle Transactions, Vol. 4, pt. 2; however, Gerald Coke contests this view in his book, where he acknowledges that although this type of transfer-printed decoration probably existed at the Giles workshop, the palette of yellow, green and brown colours is not typical.
