The shaded light red field with hooked vine around two long red gabled panels flanking a central royal blue panel each containing a variety of flowerheads and octagons, the panels linked by ivory panels containing hooked motifs, a light sea-green cross-panel above and below conatining stylised tulips rising from an arrowhead base, in a brick-red border of small motifs around light blue, royal blue and light sea-green hexagonal panels containing plant-motifs between ivory and apricot flowerhead stripes, a short kilim strip at each end, light even wear, small repairs, selvage replaced
6ft.6in. x 5ft.7in. (198cm. x 170cm.)

Lot Essay

The field of this rug is a variant on a design seen in a rug in the Bernheimer Family Collection of Carpets, sold in these Rooms, 14 February 1996, lot 10, complete with identical cross-panels above and below. The execution here shows more of a village interpretation, which is very evident in the powerful but irregularly drawn border.
