The brick-red field with an overall sandy-yellow lattice of hooked arabesques, in a sandy yellow border of light blue and brick-red stepped and hooked floral cartouches surrounded by angular floral motifs between light blue S-motif and ivory meandering lozenge vine stripes, corroded black, loss at one end, old repairs and some staining

Lot Essay

The 'Cartouche' border in this example is easily the best known border type and possibly later than the two other 'Lotto' rugs offered in this sale as lots 424 and 432. Although it is the most generally used design, this example is rare in that the ground colour of the border is a shaded yellow not the more typical indigo.
