Engraved title vignettes to vols.I-II, headpieces, illustrations, woodcut illustrations. 499 engraved plates on 500 leaves (numbered 1-226, 226[bis], 227-8, unnumbered plate [228 bis], 229-267, plate numbers 268 and 269 on one leaf, 270-499), 82 double-page, 53 folding. (Some browning and staining.) Contemporary half calf, uncut (worn). Provenance: 2nd Marquess of Bute (Luton Library bookplate).
A FINE UNSOPHISTICATED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. The complete work was to have consisted of 8 volumes with 1200 plates. It was issued on both large and normal paper stocks, with some variation in the placing of the plates (cf. the previous lot). Cohen-de Ricci p.157; Berlin Kat. 2510; Brunet 977. (4)
