CHAMBERS, Sir William. A Dissertation on Oriental Gardening... To which is annexed, an explanatory discourse, by Tan Chet-qua, of Quang-chew-fu, Gent. London: printed by W. Griffin, sold by him, T. Davies, J. Dodsley and others, 1773. 4°. Engraved additional title and dedication leaf. Second edition. Harris 118; Berlin Kat. 3503.
[Bound with:]
[Thomas WHATELY (d.1772)]. Observations on Modern Gardening... with notes by Horace (Late) Earl of Orford. London: W.Blackader for West & Hughes, 1801. 4°. Half-title. 6 engraved plates, printed in colours and finished by hand. (Some light browning or spotting.) New edition. 2 works in one volume, (266 x 210mm). Modern patterned half morocco (spine slightly faded). Provenance: Lord Dinorben (armorial bookplate).
The first work was originally published by Chambers in 1772. He added the explanatory discourse to the second edition and disguised it as the work of a Cantonese sculptor, Tan Chetqua ("a pretty general scholar; and, for a heathen, a very compleat gentleman"), who had conveniently left England in 1772, after a four-year visit. Whateley's work was first published in 1770.
