Sunqua was particularly noted as a port and ship painter, and was active in Macao and Canton between 1830 and 1870. This is an attractive example, in fine condition, of a watercolour album of the period. See J.G. Lee (ed.). Philadelphians and the China Trade 1784-1844 (Philadelphia Museum of Art University of Pennsylvania Press, 1984), item 216; Carl L. Crossman. The China Trade (Princeton, N.J., 1972).
