FONTANA, Carlo. Utilissimo trattato dell'acque correnti diviso in tre libri, nel quale si notificano le misure, ed esperienze di esse, i giuochi, e scherzi, li quali per mezzo dell'aria, e del fuoco, vengono operati dall'acqua. Rome: Giovanni Francesco Buagni, 1696.
2° (350 x 244mm). 80 engraved plates by Alessandro Specchi printed on text leaves, 2 folding plates, with the 4 unnumbered pages containing additional chapters 45-47 bound between pp. 176 and 177. (Some very light browning, one engraving discoloured from incorrect plate preparation.) 18th-century green morocco-backed marbled paper boards (very slightly rubbed at extremities). Provenance: 2nd Marquess of Bute (Luton Library bookplate.)
FIRST EDITION and a tall copy. A chief architect working under a succession of late 16th - early 17th-century popes, Fontana designed under Clement X the grand fountain at the Vatican in front of St. Peter's. In the present work Fontana investigates the nature of water, its flow and methods of constructing fountains. Many of the plates in book two depict a variety of water fountains in garden settings.
