(Some light spotting and old dampstaining, title creased, small section of upper blank margin of plate 91 torn away, plate 125 supplied from a smaller copy.) Contemporary tree calf (rebacked, original red morocco lettering-piece laid down).
Third edition, 'improved'. The designs were originally issued by George Hepplewhite's widow Alice in 1788, two years after his death in 1786. The present edition 'was issued... containing new or altered plates, in which many curvilinear or shield-back chairs and sofas of 1788 are replaced by neat rectilinear forms in the French style': DNB.
