3 parts in one volume, elephant 2° (802 x 630mm). 43 richly hand-coloured plates, many folding, after Raphael, comprising part I: letterpress text leaf printed by Marc Pagliarini with engraved headpiece and initial, general view of the gallery with title and medallion portrait of Raphael, panoramic view comprising 3 sheets, 2 double-sheet plates of doors lettered A-B, and 14 numbered double-sheet plates, by Giovanni Ottaviani after C. Savorelli and P. Camporesi; part II: engraved title (dated Rome: 1776), 13 numbered double-sheet plates by Ottaviani after Savorelli and Camporesi; part III: (lacks title), 12 numbered double-sheet plates by Giovanni Volpato after Ludovico Teseo; together with AN EXTRA SUITE OF 8 ENGRAVINGS (uncoloured) illustrating The School of Athens, Mt. Parnassus, and other Raphael Vatican frescoes, engraved by Volpato or Raphael Morghen, after drawings by Bernardino Nocchi or Stephano Tofanelli. 2°. Engraved title and 11 numbered plates after Raphael, made by Dorigny and engraved by Bellori, richly hand-coloured, the title highlighted with gold. (Silked, on guards, small sections of heavy background bodycolour slightly flaking.) Brunet IV:1111; Berlin Kat. 4066.
Finely coloured copies of both the complete set of Raphael's great frescoes at the Vatican, including the additional 8 engravings of Raphael's stanze frescoes, notably the School of Athens and Mount Parnassus, and his Cupid and Psyche designs in the Farnese Palace. These are the first engravings made of Raphael's Vatican frescoes. Their publication began as a collaboration between the painters Gaeiano Savorelli and Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. Volpato's participation was perhaps the most significant; he was also responsible for the publication of Raphael's Old and New Testament scenes in 1774. The classical motifs and groteschi ornament used in the frescoes and their wider circulation in the engravings contributed to the revival of the grotesque in the neoclassical era. Laid in are two Volpato engravings (slightly trimmed) of the Carracci gallery in the Farnese Palace, published in Galleria di Palazzo Farnese, richly overpainted in gold and colour, the colouring presumably by S.R.J.
