Finely coloured copies of both the complete set of Raphael's great frescoes at the Vatican, including the additional 8 engravings of Raphael's stanze frescoes, notably the School of Athens and Mount Parnassus, and his Cupid and Psyche designs in the Farnese Palace. These are the first engravings made of Raphael's Vatican frescoes. Their publication began as a collaboration between the painters Gaeiano Savorelli and Pietro Camporesi, and the engravers Giovanni Ottaviani and Giovanni Volpato. Volpato's participation was perhaps the most significant; he was also responsible for the publication of Raphael's Old and New Testament scenes in 1774. The classical motifs and groteschi ornament used in the frescoes and their wider circulation in the engravings contributed to the revival of the grotesque in the neoclassical era. See Giorgio Marini, Giovanni Volpato, 1735-1803, Bassano el Grappa: 1988, nos. 173-98, inter alia. Laid in are two Volpato engravings (slightly trimmed) of the Carracci gallery in the Farnese Palace, published in Galleria di Palazzo Farnese, richly overpainted in gold and colour, the colouring presumably by S.R.J. Smith who has signed them in the lower right corner.
