Josef Emil Schneckendorf (1865 -1949) was Rumanian by birth. He enrolled in the Munich Academy of Applied Arts in 1890 and began experimenting with glass in 1898. In 1907 he became director of the Grossherzoglichen Hessischen Edelglasmanufaktur in Darmstadt, established in 1901 by Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of Hesse. Schneckendorf's work was widely and successfully exhibited: Turin 1902 (Gold Medal); St. Louis Purchase Exhibition 1904 (Silver Medal); Applied Arts Exihibition, Munich 1905; 3rd German Arts and Crafts Exhibition, Dresden, 1906 (Gold Medal); St. Petersburg International Exhibition of Arts and Crafts, 1908 (Gold Medal); Nuremberg Exhibition 1909 (King Ludwig Prize); Brussels International Exhibition, 1910, (Gold Medal).
The glass produced by Schneckendorf at the Darmstadt works was characterised by its extraordinary lightness and delicacy, decorated with subtle iridescence achieved with the use of various metallic oxides giving the impression of a lustrous ceramic glaze.
