The brèche violette inset marble top with rounded corners, above a frieze centred by a concealed long drawer, inlaid with putti emblematic of Science, flanked by acanthus, the sides and reverse also with panels inlaid with putti, on slender tapering octagonal legs, the drawer with inset metal label inscribed G. EISENHARDT 59 FAUBOURG ST. ANTOINE. PARIS

Lot Essay

The table frame, with figurative tablets emblematical of the Sciences, is derived from the writing-table supplied in 1771 for Louis XVI's Garde Meuble by J.-H. Riesener and now in the Petit Trianon. A copy of the writing-table by A. Beurdeley (d. 1919) at West Dean Park was sold at Christie's House sale, 2 June 1986, lot 116.
