Although virtually nothing is known about the artist, a similarly signed work was offered at Sotheby Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 2 May 1984, lot 1 and Sotheby's, New York, 12 Jan. 1989, lot 110; another, depicting a basket flask, oysters and a parrot, is in the Lebel collection Paris. According to Dr. Sam Segal some works by the same hand have previously been attributed to Philips Angel: see, for example, the picture sold in these Rooms, 16 December 1988, lot 128 and that formerly with Gebr. Douwes, Amsterdam (see the catalogue of the exhibition, Masters of Middelburg, Kunsthandel K. & V. Waterman, Amsterdam, March 1984, pp. 200-1, no. 42, illustrated).
