A Study for 'Unaccepted'

This drawing is a study for the seated male figure in an oil dated 1869, sold in these Rooms, 30 November 1984, lot 98. The picture is reproduced in Tissot's personal photographic album 1:67, which was exhibited at the Dudley Gallery, London in 1882 (Willard E. Misfeldt The Albums of James Tissot, 1982, p. 39, illustrated). The oil differs from the drawing in that the man's hands are obscured by the seated girl. Michael Wentworth points out that a study for the girl is in a private collection in Los Angeles. A similar seated male figure, dressed in a tricorne hat and postilion's coat, can be seen in A Tryst at a Riverside Café, exhibited in the Tissot Exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery, 1984, no. 26., and illustrated in The Albums of James Tissot 1:72 (op. cit., p. 42 ).
