Lot Essay

Princess Elizabeth (1635-1650) was the second daughter of Charles I and Henrietta Maria. Her brief and unhappy life reached its melancholy climax when she took leave of her father on 29 January 1649, the day before his execution, an event from which she never recovered. In the summer of 1650 she was sent to Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight, where her father had been imprisoned, and she died there of a chill on 8 September.
