A particularly good example of the sensitive studies of young women at which Wyburd excelled. Writing in the Art Journal in 1877 (p. 140), James Dafforne noted: 'The characteristics of Mr. Wyburd's art are, principally, a perfect realisation of female beauty, an attractive manner in setting out his figures, and a refinement of finish which is sometimes carried almost to excess'.

As well as painting portraits, Wyburd undertook genre, literary and historical subjects, often with an Eastern theme of a fashionable, romantic kind. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1848 having already won the Silver Medal at the Society of Arts in 1845, and began to exhibit at the Academy in 1846. He also supported the British Institution and the Society of British Artists.
