ARTHUR DAVID MCCORMICK (1860-1943)
Arthur David McCormick, a prolific watercolourist, engraver and graphic designer, as well as a painter in oils, was born in Coleraine, Ireland, and studied at the South Kensington Schools of Art 1883-86. An inveterate traveller and mountaineer, he accompanied Sir Martin Conway's expedition to the Himalayas in 1892 and Clinton T. Dent's expedition to the Caucasus in 1894; he was elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1895. He illustrated many books including R.F. Burton's Wanderings in Three Continents (1901) and W.M. Conway's The Alps (1904). McCormick's allied interest in the sea can be seen in his acceptance of commissions to illustrate Henry Newbolt's Drake's Drum (1914) and Richard Southey's Life of Nelson (1916).
