Lot Essay

George Heriot (1563-1624) was goldsmith and pawnbroker to King James I and his wife Anne of Denmark. By 1620 their majesties were so deeply in debt to their financier that Heriot was offered a monopoly on the revenues from the importation of sugar. This secured his fortune, which he left to the educational institutions that still flourish and bear his name in Edinburgh today.
