Lot Essay

The model's bonnet in this picture is the same as that worn by the elegante in The Return from the Boating Trip, of 1873 (Christopher Wood, Tissot, 1986, p. 73, pl. 70). The subject of a girl in a punt also occurs in Jeune Femme en bateau, 1870 (op. cit., p. 49, pl. 41).

Hélène Camille Barbe, née Lechertier, to whom this picture was given by Tissot, must have had some connection with Lechertier Barbe, the firm of artists' colourmen which existed in Jermyn Street until comparatively recent times.

We are grateful to Professor Willard E. Misfeldt for his help in preparing this entry.
