Lot Essay

Rowlandson often represented town centres such as those at Norwich, Smithfield and Covent Garden, using the market-place, focus of town activity, as a setting for the detailed essays of social observation on which his reputation as chronicler of 18th and early 19th Century life is built.
Rowlandson drew several scenes in Kingston upon Thames market-place. There are two in the museum at Kingston upon Thames: one was with the Sabin Galleries in 1939, and the other was formerly in the collection of Joseph Grego. A similar view of Kingston upon Thames was sold at Christie's London, 12 April 1994, lot 34.
