This watercolour shows more-or-less the same view as that of Le Crotoy, vue de l'embouchure de la Somme, but taken from the middle of the estuary rather than the facing shore. Similar in style, technique and size, it must date from the same time, 1823 or slightly earlier. Le Crotoy was the subject of an aquatint by Newton Fielding, sumitted to the censors in 1825, as part of Ostervald's, Excursions sur les Côtes et dans les ports de France. We are grateful to Patrick Noon for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
