Lot Essay

This serving-table with cut-corners, fretted tracery frieze and open-fretted legs in the Gothic manner, relates to a table pattern published in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 1754, pl. LXXIII. A pair of related marble-topped tables, with Gothic-fretted friezes and legs, is in the Lady Lever Art Gallery (P. Macquoid, English Furniture, Tapestry and Needlework of the XVI-XIXth Centuries, London, 1928, 234, pl.62).
