Lot Essay

The statuary white marble top of this 'mosaic' sideboard-table is inlaid in Derbyshire bluejohn in Roman 'pavement' fashion. Sacrificial ewers, accompanying a central flowered pattera, are within a trellised and scalloped fretwork of ribbons and a flower-spandrelled eliptic medallion with antique-fluted frame. The frame of the table is embellished en suite with an elliptic pattera wreathed by wheat, emblematic of the harvest-goddess Ceres, and is accompanied by pastoral trophies of festive instruments. Its design and ornament reflects the antique taste promoted by The Works in Architecture by Robert and James Adam, published between 1773 and 1822.
