The cut-cornered rectangular top, crossbanded in rosewood and inlaid with boxwood lines, above two adjustable shelves, the angles with Egyptian herm figures, the sides with circular carrying-handles centred by a lion-mask, on an eared plinth, with hidden metal castors , with depository label to the underside for 'WHITES & CO. LTD. WINCHESTER' and stamped 'MRS V. BARKER' and inscribed in ink '96', lacking two ormolu herm feet, minor losses to veneer

Lot Essay

The Egyptian Isis-priestess herms of this pattern featured on a French-style secretaire sold anonymously in these Rooms, 17 August 1980, lot 144. The latter related to another secretaire bearing the label of S. Jamar (d.1826) and inscribed 'Jamar French/CABINET MAKER: Manufactures all sorts of FRENCH FURNITURE in the most fashionable manner 29, WARDOUR STREET, SOHO' (sold by Sir Antony Hornby in these Rooms, 19 November 1970, lot 46).
