Lot Essay

This form of 'Dumb waiter with two tops' features in the 1819 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster, and a pair attributed to this firm are listed at Mere Hall, Cheshire in 1840 and were sold by the Executors of the late Mrs. Helen Langford-Brooke, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 102. Another pair, also featuring reed-enriched pillars and 'claws' and likely to have been manufactured in Dublin probably by Gillingtons, was formerly in the collection of the Earl of Carrick at Mount Juliet, Ireland and was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 17 November 1983, lot 98.

George and Samuel Gillington were recorded at various addresses and in various partnerships between 1815 and 1838. A set of Regency klismos berères by Gillingtons of Dublin was offered anonymously in these Rooms, 7 July 1994, lot 40.
