Each double gateleg-action table crossbanded overall and inlaid with boxwood and ebonised lines, the semi-circular hinged top inlaid with a semi-circle containing radiating flame-figured mahogany, surrounded by radiating segmented veneer, one table enclosing a green baize-lined playing-surface, the other a conforming-veneered surface, above a panelled frieze, on square tapering legs, one inscribed in pencil to the reverse '3/8/45', the other inscribed in chalk to the underside '4' and with a typed paper label inscribed 'PRATT & SONS LTD'

A related pair of 'compass' satinwood tables with 'term' or hermed feet at Mersham-le-Hatch, Kent may have been supplied in 1773 by Thomas Chippendale (d.1779) (P. Thornton, 'The Furnishings of Mersham-le-Hatch, Part II', Apollo, May 1970, p. 445, fig. 7). They were sold by the Knatchbull family in these Rooms, 4 July 1991, lot 59. A further related pair of satinwood and marquetry card-tables were sold anonymously in these Rooms, 18 November 1993, lot 172.
