Lot Essay
This bolection moulded chimneypiece of Frosterley Fossil marble, quarried at nearby Harehope in County Durham, is likely to have been supplied by John Thorp of Bakewell. A marble-cutter and supplier, Thorp also worked at Castle Howard under Sir John Vanbugh and Beverley under Colin Campbell, to which he supplied two chimneypieces in 1717. It is, therefore, pertinent that Frosterley marble was also used for architraves at Castle Howard, as well as for the bolection moulded architraves of the Hall at Wentworth.
It may well, however, be William Thornton (1670-1721), joiner and architect of York, who provides the link, as closely related chimneypieces appear at both Bramham Park and Beningborough Hall, where he worked before and after Castle Howard and Wentworth (J. Lees-Milne, op. cit., p. 204 and pp. 249-50).
