There are other versions of this composition in the collections of Sir Brinsley Ford (see W.G. Constable, Richard Wilson, 1953, pp. 217-218, pl. 106a) and the Yale Center for British Art (M. Cormack, A Concise Catalogue of Paintings in the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, 1985, p. 252-3, no. B.1981.25.690.). Constable (loc. cit.) notes that the questionable identification of the subject as The Temple of Venus at Baiae seems first to have occured in a review of the Collection of Sir Frederick Cock, Bt., in the Burlington Magazine (March 1917, p. 118), but also notes that this is difficult to reconcile with the other view purporting to be of the same structure (Constable, loc. cit., pl. 74 a).
