A silver-hilted German hunting hanger
Early 19th Century, the blade Solingen, dated 1626
The broad double-edged blade (shortened) divided on each face into fluted panels at the forte and with a central fuller flanked by engraved lines, etched throughout with Latin and German mottoes, and, near the base, the maker's (?) initials 'W.W.', and 'V.S.' and marks (?), a lion, a winged lion, an eagle and a sea-lion, all crowned, and the date, the silver hilt comprising short quillons, lion-mask pommel-cap, and staghorn grip with three transverse rivets with oval silver heads, and with strips of silver at back and front (one missing) struck with silver mark '13'
