A very rare 10-bore 'English' lock musket
English, circa 1650
With heavy two-stage sighted barrel lightly swamped at the muzzle, the top of the breech cut with the initials 'FL', bevelled lock retained by two side-nails and with dog catch and bridle on the steel-spring, the trigger secured by a large-headed pin above the tail of the lock, blackened full stock (repaired, old worm holes), the butt with the initials 'FL' on each side, iron heel-plate and trigger-guard, later single ramrod-pipe, and later ramrod, London proof mark

Provenance
Dunster Castle, Somerset, home of the Luttrell family since 1376. The Armoury at Dunster Castle was originally formed by Francis Luttrell, whose initials this musket bears, possibly during the Civil War. A number of pieces from the Dunster Armoury were exhibited at the Guildhall Museum, Rochester, 'The Craft of the Gunmaker', August 1991 - January 1992
