Lot Essay

Etienne Grafe and Professor Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier both confirmed the attribution from photographs in letters dated 18 and 22 September 1996 respectively.
Grafe dates the pastel to 1815-1825, when Berjon was working in Lyon, and compares it to a drawing illustrated in E. Hardouin-Fugier and E. Grafe, La Peinture lyonnaise au XIXe siècle, Paris, 1995, p. 63.
The frame of the present lot is by the furniture and frame maker Claude Pepin who got his maîtrise in 1775 and was active till 1782-5.
