Bénouville visited the site several times: In 1845 he painted the Claudian Acqueduct, in 1852 he executed a watercolour of it, and, in 1859, made a drawing of the church, which appears in the present sheet to be seen from a slightly more distant viewpoint, M.-M. Aubrun, Achille Bénouville, Paris, 1986, nos. 40, D35, D57.
This drawing is part of a series of finished views of the outskirts of Rome, all of similar dimensions, reproduced in Aubrun, op. cit., nos. D21, D28, D36, D39, D56bis.
A student of Picot, Bénouville won the Premier Grand Prix du Paysage in 1845, and left for the Villa Medici in Rome for four years. He eventually stayed in Italy for 26 years. Before he was sent to the Villa Medici, Bénouville had already visited Italy twice in 1838 and, with Corot, in 1843.
