Lot Essay

What is today an integral part of the French Côte d'Azur was, from 1388 until 1793, part of the House of Savoy. Taken by France from 1793 to 1814, Nice was definitively ceded to France in 1860. A smaller sister port to that of Marseilles, Nice was still an important trading place and starting point for the traveller to the Orient. Ouvrié, known for his scenic views of France, paints Nice in her soft Italian colours, depicting Sunday churchgoers in the Cours Saleya, where the flower market now resides.
