A SOUTH GERMAN WALNUT, OAK, FRUITWOOD AND MARQUETRY NONSUCH CHEST
Early 16th Century
The moulded rectangular hinged top with two planked panels and enclosing a plain interior, the architectural facade inlaid with a rusticated triumphal arch with burr-walnut string courses and oeil-de-boeuf windows, supported by fluted pilasters, the central arched panel depicting a cappriccio of Classical ruins and flanked by interlaced foliate sprigs, flanked by giant order fluted pilasters and blind architraves, the sides inlaid with a further triumphal arch with arabesque marquetry panel and cast-iron carrying-handle, on ring-turned bun feet, restorations to top, the interior previously with divisions
