Lot Essay

Jean-Jacques Werner (d. 1849) was one of the most important furniture-makers of the Restauration period. In 1820 he became member of the Sociéte d'encouragement pour l'industrie and was subsequently appointed as fournisseur du Garde meuble.
A closely related commode, stamped by Werner, with similar scrolling inlays to the frieze and to the doors, is illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Français du XIXe Siècle, Paris, 1984, p. 631.
