A PAIR OF ORMOLU AND RED GRIOTTE MARBLE SIX-LIGHT CANDELABRA

Each with a Greek maiden supporting a cornucopia issuing five foliate scrolling branches with reeded and gadrooned spreading circular drip-pans, centred by a lotus-leaf and gadrooned drip-pan, on a circular plinth with gadrooned band and foliate-decorated flaming torches with foliate swags below a lotus flowerhead, on a moulded palmette, lotus-leaf rim and circular plinth

Lot Essay

These candelabra follow a polychrome-painted design by Pierre-Philippe Thomire, reputedly in the Royal Collection in Stockholm. A pair of candelabra of identical model was sold anonymously at Christie's New York, 26 April 1990, lot 63, and a further pair in these Rooms, 11 June 1992, lot 162.
