Lot Essay

The coat-of-arms of this embroidery is that of the Pasini family. Different branches of this family, originally from Friuli, settled in Padova, Asolo, Treviso, Modena, Cesena and Rimini.
The clerical hat, being that of a Bishop, indicates the probable bearer of these arms to be Francesco Maria Pasini (d. 1773) from the Rimini branch of the family, who was consecrated bishop of Todi in 1760 by the Cardinal-Duke of York, Henry-Benedict Stuart (d. 1807), last male heir to the House of Stuart and brother to the Young Pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie (d. 1788).
A related pair of Brussels armorial tapestries with the arms of the Albani family, was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 8 December 1977, lot 134.
