Lot Essay
This tapestry depicts Christ meeting the woman of Samaria, an adulteress, by Jacob's Well outside Sychar on his way from Judea to Galilee. She came to the well to draw water and was astonished when Christ requested a drink, as Jews were not to address strange women and Jews and Samaritans disliked each other. The disciples, returning from the town, were surprised to find Christ talking to the woman.
The tapestry is closely related to two framents, formerly the collection Böhler, Munich, and illustrated in B. Kurth, Gotische Bildteppiche aus Frankreich und Flandern, Munich, 1923, illustration 64 and 65, which illustrate the life of Christ. These fragments as well as this lot appear to have been joined at one point to form one long tapestry illustrating the life of Christ.
